Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a compound with the formula (CH3)2SO2. It is also known by several other names including methyl sulfone and dimethyl sulfone (DMSO2). It is considered relatively inert chemically. Because of its polarity and thermal stability, Methyl sulfonyl methane or Methylsulfonylmethane or Dimethyl sulfone is used industrially as a high-temperature solvent for both inorganic and organic substances. It is used as a medium in organic synthesis. It is recognized by U.S. FDA as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) substance. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) has become a popular dietary supplement used for a variety of purposes, including its most common use as an anti-inflammatory agent. It has been well-investigated in animal models, as well as in human clinical trials and experiments.

DEFINITION
Methylsulfonylmethane contains NLT 98.0% and NMT 102.0% of methylsulfonylmethane (C2H6O2S), calculated on the anhydrous basis. The chromatographic purity is NLT 99.8%.

B. The retention time of the major peak of the Sample solution corresponds to that of the Standard solution, as obtained in the Assay.
ASSAY
To pass the chromatographic test.
Acceptance criteria:  98.0%–102.0% on the anhydrous basis

TESTS
Chromatographic Purity and Limit of Dimethyl Sulfoxide: To pass the test
Acceptance criteria:
Individual impurities:  NMT 0.1% of dimethyl sulfoxide; NMT 0.05% of any other individual impurity
Total impurities: NMT 0.2% for all impurities, including dimethyl sulfoxide
Melting Range or Temperature: 108.5C –110.5C
Microbial Enumeration Tests: The total aerobic microbial count is NMT 1000 cfu/g or mL, and the total combined molds and yeasts count is NMT 100 cfu/g or mL.
Absence of Specified Microorganisms: It meets the requirements for absence of Escherichia coli in 10 g.
Water Determination: NMT 0.1%. [Note— 500 mg of methylsulfonylmethane may be required for this analysis.
