Butyric acid also known under the systematic name butanoic acid is a carboxylic acid with the structural formula CH3CH2CH2-COOH. Salts and esters of butyric acid are known as butyrates or butanoates. Butyric acid is a colorless liquid having a taste somewhat like butter and an unpleasant odor. Butyric acid is a naturally occurring short-chain fatty acid found in the human body, butter, and numerous other sources. In food manufacturing, it is used as a flavoring agent. Butyric Acid, FCC is used as an animal feed supplement due to the ability to reduce pathogenic bacterial colonization and is an approved food flavoring in the EU
