α-Lipoic Acid or alpha-Lipoic Acid or Thioctic Acid, is an organosulfur compound derived from caprylic acid. It is also manufactured and is available as a dietary supplement, marketed as an antioxidant.

CHARACTERS
Appearance: Yellow, crystalline powder.
Solubility: Very slightly soluble in water, very soluble in dimethylformamide, freely soluble in methanol.

Infrared absorption spectrophotometry.
Appearance of solution: The solution is clear.
Dissolve 0.50 g in a 20 g/L solution of sodium hydroxide and dilute to 10 mL with the same solution.
