Acesulfame or Acetosulfam or Acesulfamum is a sulfamate ester, an organonitrogen heterocyclic compound, an oxacycle and an organic heteromonocyclic compound. It is a sweet item and its potassium salt is used as an artificial sweetener.
Properties and Specifications of Acesulfame or Acetosulfam or
Acesulfamum:
Appearance: Odorless, white, crystalline powder.
Taste: Approximately 200 times as sweet as sucrose. It has bitter-metallic after taste.
Melting point: 123C literature.
Relative density: about 1.83
Solubility: Very soluble in water, very slightly soluble in ethanol.
Acesulfame Potassium USP NF Grade:
C4H4NO4SK - 201.24
6-Methyl-1,2,3-oxathiazine-4(3H )-one-2,2-dioxide potassium salt;
3,4-Dihydro-6-methyl-1,2,3-oxathiazine-4-one-2,2-dioxide potassium salt CAS Number 55589-62-3
DEFINITION
Acesulfame Potassium contains NLT 99.0% and NMT 101.0% of C4H4NO4SK, calculated on the dried
basis.
IDENTIFICATION
A. Infrared Absorption 〈197K〉
B. Identification Tests—General, Potassium 〈191〉
Limit of Fluoride: NMT 3 ppm
Acidity or Alkalinity:
Sample solution: 4.0 g in 20 mL of carbon dioxide-free water
Analysis: Add 0.1 mL of bromothymol blue. If the solution is yellow, titrate with 0.01 N sodium
hydroxide to produce a blue color. If the solution is blue, titrate with 0.01 N hydrochloride acid
to produce a yellow color.
Acceptance criteria: NMT 0.2 mL of 0.01 N sodium hydroxide or NMT 0.2 mL of 0.01 N hydrochloric acid
is required.
Loss on Drying: Dry a sample at 105C for 3 h: it loses NMT 1.0% of its weight.
Packaging and Storage: Preserve in a well-closed container, and protect from light.
Store at room temperature.
Acesulfame Potassium BP Ph Eur Grade:
C4H4KNO4S --- 201.2 --- CAS Number 55589-62-3
Action and use: Sweetening agent.
DEFINITION
Potassium 6-methyl-1,2,3-oxathiazin-4-olate 2,2-dioxide.
Content: 99.0 per cent to 101.0 per cent (dried substance).
CHARACTERS
Appearance: White or almost white, crystalline powder or colourless crystals.
Solubility: Soluble in water, very slightly soluble in acetone and in ethanol (96 per cent).
IDENTIFICATION
First identification: A, C
Second identification: B, C
A. Infrared absorption spectrophotometry. (To be similar to reference standard.)
B. Thin-layer chromatography. (To pass the test.)
C. 0.5 mL of solution S (see Tests) gives reaction (b) of potassium.
TESTS
Solution S: Dissolve 10.0 g in carbon dioxide-free water and dilute to 50 mL
with the same solvent.
Appearance of solution: Solution S is clear and colourless.
Acidity or alkalinity: To 20 mL of solution S add 0.1 mL of bromothymol blue
solution. Not more than 0.2 mL of 0.01 M hydrochloric
acid or 0.01 M sodium hydroxide is required to change the colour of the
indicator.
Impurity A: To pass the test. (0.125 per cent 3-oxobutanamide (acetylacetamide),).
Impurity B: To pass the test. (20 ppm 5-chloro-6-methyl-1,2,3-oxathiazin-4(3H)-one
2,2-dioxide).
Fluorides: Maximum 3 ppm.
Loss on drying: Maximum 1.0 per cent, determined on 1.000 g by drying in an oven at 105C
for 3 h.
