Salicylic acid is used in the production of other pharmaceuticals. Salicylic acid as a medication is used most commonly to help remove the outer layer of the skin. As such, it is used to treat warts, psoriasis, acne vulgaris, ringworm, dandruff, and ichthyosis. Salicylic acid is also used as a food preservative, bactericide, and an antiseptic.

Action and use: Keratolytic.

DEFINITION
2-Hydroxybenzenecarboxylic acid.
Content: 99.0 per cent to 100.5 per cent (dried substance).

CHARACTERS
Appearance: White or almost white, crystalline powder or white or colourless, acicular crystals.
Solubility: Slightly soluble in water, freely soluble in ethanol (96 per cent), sparingly soluble in methylene chloride.

C. Dissolve about 30 mg in 5 mL of 0.05 M sodium hydroxide, neutralise if necessary and dilute to 20 mL with water. 1 mL of the solution gives reaction (a) of salicylates.

TESTS
Solution S: Dissolve 2.5 g in 50 mL of boiling distilled water, cool and filter.
Appearance of solution: The solution is clear and colourless.
Dissolve 1 g in 10 mL of ethanol (96 per cent).Related substances: To pass the test.
Chlorides: Maximum 100 ppm.
Sulfates: Maximum 200 ppm.
Loss on drying: Maximum 0.5 per cent, determined on 1.000 g by drying in a desiccator.
Sulfated ash: Maximum 0.1 per cent, determined on 2.0 g.

Salicylic Acid contains NLT 98.0% and NMT 102.0% of salicylic acid (C7H6O3 ), calculated on the dried basis.
