Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide

CAS No.: 1338-23-4
Molecular Weight: 210.22 g/mol
Chemical Formula C8H18O6

Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide or MEKP or 2-Butanone Peroxide is an organic peroxide, a high explosive similar to acetone peroxide. MEKP is a colorless, oily liquid with mint like odor. MEKP is slightly less sensitive to shock and temperature, and more stable in storage. Dilute solutions of 30 to 60% MEKP are used in industry and by hobbyists as the catalyst which initiates the cross-linking of unsaturated polyester resins used in fiberglass, and casting. For this application, MEKP is dissolved in dimethyl phthalate, cyclohexane peroxide, or diallyl phthalate to reduce sensitivity to shock. Commercial MEKP contains a mixture of peroxide, hydroperoxide, and active oxygen in dimethyl phthalate (DMP), which is used as a diluent to prevent decomposition and explosion of MEKP. Because of the high reactivity of MEKP, it is available only as a 40% to 60% solution in dimethyl phthalate or other phthalates.
