Gamma butyrolactone or 4-Butyrolactone or dihydrofuran-2(3H)-one or Oxolan-2-one (GBL) is a hygroscopic colorless, water-miscible liquid with a weak characteristic odor. It is mainly used as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals and in pharmaceuticals. It is used as a solvent for special resins, in photography, in batteries, and as an electrolyte.
