Ethyl acetate or Ethyl ethanoate is the organic compound with the formula C4H8O2. This colorless liquid has a characteristic sweet fruity smell and is used in glues, nail polish removers, and in the decaffeination process of tea and coffee. Ethyl acetate is used primarily as a solvent and diluent. It is commonly used to clean circuit boards and in some nail varnish removers. It is also used in paints. Ethyl acetate is present in confectionery, perfumes, and fruits. It has E number of E1504.

ASSAY
To pass the test by titrimetry.
Acceptance criteria: 99.0% to 100.5%
Limit of Nonvolatile Residue:
Sample: Ethyl Acetate
Analysis: Evaporate the Sample in a tared porcelain dish on a steam bath, and dry at 105° for 1 h.
Acceptance criteria: NMT 0.02%
Limit of Methyl Compounds: To pass the test.
Chromatographic Purity: To pass the test.
Acceptance criteria: The area of the ethyl acetate peak is NLT 99.5% of the sum of the areas of all the peaks.
Acidity:
Sample solution: 2.0 mL of Ethyl Acetate in 10 mL of neutralized alcohol
Analysis: Add 2 drops of phenolphthalein to the Sample solution. Neutralize with 0.10 N sodium hydroxide.
Acceptance criteria: NMT 0.10 mL of 0.10 N sodium hydroxide is required.
Readily Carbonizable Substances Test:
Sample: 2 mL of Ethyl Acetate
Analysis: Add the Sample carefully to 10 mL of sulfuric acid to form separate layers.
Acceptance criteria: No dark zone is developed within 15 min.
Specific Gravity: 0.894–0.898
Packaging and Storage: Preserve in tight containers and avoid exposure to excessive heat.

TESTS
Appearance of solution: The solution is clear and colourless.
Mix 1 mL of the substance to be examined and 15 mL of water.
Acidity: To 10 mL of ethanol (96 per cent) add 0.1 mL of phenolphthalein solution and 0.01 M sodium hydroxide until the colour changes to pink. Add 5.5 mL of the substance to be examined and 0.25 mL of 0.02 M sodium hydroxide. The solution remains pink for not less than 15 s.
Relative density: 0.898 to 0.902.
Refractive index: 1.370 to 1.373.
Reaction with sulfuric acid: Carefully add 2 mL to 10 mL of sulfuric acid. After 15 min, the interface between the 2 liquids is not coloured.
Related substances: to pass the test by Gas chromatography.
Limit: --total: not more than 0.2 per cent of the area of the principal peak.
Residue on evaporation: Maximum 30 ppm.
Evaporate 100.0 g to dryness on a water-bath and dry in an oven at 100-105 °C. The residue weighs not more than 3 mg.
Water: Maximum 0.1 per cent, determined on 10.0 mL.
STORAGE
Protected from light, at a temperature not exceeding 30C.
